The definition of life is in constant flux, and will change when we encounter extra-terrestrial life. If you think about most traditional definitions of life, a fire counts as alive. Does a fire grow? yes. Does a fire reproduce? yes. Can a fire die? yes. Does a fire respond to stimuli? yes. Does a fire metabolize? yes. But most everyone would simply consider fire to be a chemical reaction, not a life form, so it must be excluded. To exclude fire, many people add the definition that life must be organic, or that life must be composed of cells. Viruses, however, are alive, but are not cellular. And some day we may encounter, or create, non-carbon-based life. There are just no absolutes in "life". :)
