  • It is a method of gaining converts which many an anti-Mormon will accuse us of using. The basic idea is that a unmarried Mormon flirts with/romances someone with the intent to use the romantic relationship to lure a nonmember into joining the Church. The implication of this accusation is that the Mormon is not really sincere about the relationship with the nonmember and is only using it as a tool for conversion. This is the accusation. Now let me respond to it. It would not surprise me if some misguided members of the Church actually do this. However, those that do, don't understand the true nature of missionary work. Such a technique is dishonest and should not be used. In the end, it would lead to more bad feelings about the Church than it will produce converts because it is based on a false premise, namely an insincere romantic relationship. It also bases the conversion of the nonmember on the wrong foundation, namely an attempt to please the love interest. You can look at other posts that I have made on this subject and you will see that I am quite consistent on this topic. One should never join a Church simply to please another person. One should only join a church because one agrees with the teaching of that church. Likewise, one should not use an insincere relationship as a means to attempt to convert someone to a religion. A romantic relationship may be a starting point from which one person may want to investigate the other person's religion, but that should not be the reason to join. A couple may decide that religious differences are a reason to end a relationship. However, one should not change religions just to save a relationship. Religion is too important and serious of a matter to be taken lightly. One should carefully consider a religion before one accepts it. In accepting it, one should do so for no other reason than because one truly believes what it teaches. If a person does use "flirt to convert" as a means of trying to influence someone to join a church, then that person is doing something wrong in my opinion and it does not matter to what church that person belongs.
