Say I was driving at a legal 25mph when I had to slam on the brake to avoid an animal. The vehicle behind me also slammed on the brake but was rear-ended by another vehicle? Am I still considered a party to the accident even though I wasn't hit?

No. The third car was driving too close, which was the proximate cause of the accident. And you were not hit, so you did not have an accident. You can still be sued for negligence. Of course, you would most likely win so long as your brake lights were working. -
