Damned if I can tell aside from possibly the nose being a bit different... and the skin on the face on the mule seems a bit more tight against the skull unless its just THIS mule... Donkey below is light brown: mule is dark brown...

They are usually very easy to tell the difference. A mule is very horse-like. It doesn't have the coarse hair like a donkey. It has horse hair. It's smoother and finer. It's a clean coat. It's much bigger usually. Mammoth Jacks are big but donkey are pretty small and usually greyish in color. Mules have a more barrel chest than donkeys. Donkeys are very narrow and their legs look like they are both coming out of the same hole in their chest. A donkey doesn't look like anything you'd want to ride, like you would never be comfortable up there. But mule looks like a riding animal.

The ears are shorter, they are less hairy and built like a horse. The tail is usually more like a horses, too. The head is usually more horse like, not so thick through the jaw. You can't go by the color. We've raised two sorrel mules with white socks and paint markings, one solid bay, one bay with four white stockings with black spots on the stockings, and a grulla
