I am a us citizen but I want to travel. I was thinking I could co to canada for a few months and work there...maybe learn to be a bartender. What steps would I need to take so that I could legally work and live temporarily in canada?

First, you have to make yourself more desirable as an employee than the typical Canadian with whom you would be competing. That's going to be tough, I think. My travels around Ontario have been most pleasant because of the wait staff and service personnel. They are very friendly and open, and do more than just bring you the fish and chips that you ordered yesterday. You might actually have to develop a skill, after you pick one. Do not go there without money in your pocket.

Going through an employment agency might work as well. Tourist resorts and Canada's many tree-planting operations are always searching for warm bodies. They'll help you get a visa and then you'll be on your way. If that fails, you can basically call the Yukon and get a job lined up within the hour. Once you have a job waiting for you, you can apply for the visa yourself. I can't think of a good reason why they would reject you.
