Many page views can occur during a single visit. Most web statistics rely on "referrer" information, i.e. how did you get to the page you are viewing? Page views that are refered from the website the page is in would be from the same visitor. As an example, if you are on a home page that has a link to a "faq" and an "about us" on the same website -- then if you click those links -- it is part of the same visit. In that case, 1 visit, 3 page views. If you found those pages independently via a search engine, and clicked through from the search engine to each of those three pages, it would be 3 visits, 3 pageviews. However, those three visits count as 1 "unique visitor". This information is useful to determine how big the audience is, and to what extent people browse around on the website.
