  • I clip my cats nails with cat nail clippers about once a month. It may not be comfortable for them, but it's much more humane than declawing them. As long as the cat shows know signs of discomfort afterwards, and you aren't cutting into the quick (sp), it should be fine.
  • I'm not a professional, but I've dealt with a cat or two in my day. Cats scratch more when their claws get too long because they're trying to wear them down themselves. I don't know about your parents' cat but mine actually gets caught on the carpet when his claws get too long and he runs the risk of hurting himself. Clipping his claws is just like us clipping our fingernails. It cuts away dead keratin that does absolutely no harm as long as the quick (or blood vessel) isn't cut. If you ask him what his specific concerns are, you will probably be able to find research to soothe his fears.
