  • I have tried reading Lord of the Rings. I'll probably get Downrated for this, but I thought it was boring. I only got through 90 pages of it. I think it is a boring series.
  • I read "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" and I loved them both. I do recommend you read it. You might also consider "The Chronicles of Narnia" too.
  • LOTR isn't bad, but it flies by fast, as to other things to read: Lolita (thrilling, if a little disturbing) The midnighters series The Farsala series The Band of Brothers books
  • I found the Hobbit to be an easy read...Lord of the Rings was a bit of an effort the first time I had a go at it...sterner stuff than old Bilbo Baggins journey...I was probably about 15....I'm 49 now and I've lost count of the number of times I've read them all...once a year during my 20's probably, but now...every few years is enough of a fix. Plus, I moved on to other authors!
  • I read the series years ago and loved them. Start with ,The Hobbit, it really is the hook to reel you into the Lord of the Rings
  • G'day Littlemisswallflower, Thanks for your question. I would suggest reading the Hobbit first followed by the Lord of the Rings as the Hobbit sets up the Lord of the Rings. You might also might want to look at joining What should I read next? which makes suggestions based on your tastes. http://www.whatshouldireadnext.com/ Regards
  • Yes, As others said - start with The Hobbit. I though they were great. I first read The Hobbit in 5th grade and I read the entire series a couple time in high school and college. I enjoyed the books and the movies.
  • Try it at least, but if you don't like it, stop! There's plenty of pages to make your mind up and brake if you want to. The previous advice here is sound - both on the Hobbit as a starting place, if only because it 'sets the stage' for LOTR and on other authors worth reading. The Hobbit was written for his children, LOTR for himself and his publisher. There's a LOTR section here and it may give you an idea of the complexity of the mythology Tolkien created. Personally I find it fascinating, engaging, saddening and everything a classical heroic fantasy should be.
  • If you liked "Harry...." I think you will find these books to your liking as well, as suggested read "The Hobbit" first as this is the set-up to the rest of the books. "the Hobbit drew me into the whole trilogy!
  • i am an obsessive reader, reading ten to fifteen books a month. i read everything from Steve Gould's Jumper and wildside novels to R. A. Salvatore's Dark elf novels to star wars and star trek books, laurel k. Hamilton's Anita Blake series, chose your own adventure paper backs, Bertrice Small's Romance novels and even the Dragonlance series. but i choked on the Lord of the Rings. It has made great animation and movies; but the novel is dry, Boring and hard to wrap your mind around. n
  • READ it! You'll LOVE it! : ))
  • yeah definitely much better even than the movies, though might I add that reading the Silmarillion first would make the books (heck and the movies too) even more enjoyable and colorful
  • G'day Littlemisswallflower, Thank you for your question. Yes. If you enjoy fantasy novels, then you will probably like Lord of the Rings. Regards
  • like most of the other answers read the hobbit first.that will get you used to tolkiens style of writing.lotr books are not the easiest books in the world to read.you can't speed through them.but if you take you time you will enjoy them.
