I have 2 alarms in my house. If yours activate when you cook then you have them located in the wrong place. Contact your local fire dept for advice on positioning your alarms :)

We have a few around the house, including one that is 26 feet up in the air above our great room which is above the kitchen. It takes a lot of smoke to get up there. We have installed a good venting hood so it won't go off with cooking. It's too hard to turn it OFF! And one goes off and sets all the others. It's happened once and it was maddening!

We have one right by the bathroom and whenever someone opens the door after they took a hot shower, the steam from the shower sets off the alarm. :P

This is fairly common. In most jurisdictions, the smoke alarm shouldn't be located in or near a kitchen area. New fire codes require you to have them located inside and outside each sleeping area and at the top of stairs leading to the sleeping areas. As far as smoke alarms going off from steam after taking a shower... Three things you might try: 1. Use the exhaust fan or window to ventilate the bathroom. 2. Move the smoke detector further away from the bathroom. Most residential fire codes ( I believe it is the International Fire Code) states that smoke detectors must be at least five feet away from bathroom doors. 3. See if you can find a different type of smoke detector. Photo-electric smoke detectors are more sensitive to steam than Ionization types. See if replacing it with an ionization will help resolve this problem.
