  • I did a year with them. I didn't like it; but I've heard that 9th grade is the slowest year. I'll give you my personal experience. 3 months after I enrolled, I recieved my first book, Psychology. Some weeks later I recieved my second book, English. My brother-in-law did American Homeschool for high school. He's 13 years older than I am, and he said that the English book looks exactly the same as when he did it. Yikes. I got a total of 5 books throughout the year; they didn't send any math for the entire year. The system is really slow; it takes about 3 weeks to get a test you've mailed in back. (I nicknamed it the Pony Express.) I ended up switching. My experience was pretty negative: the courses were boring, mailing everything is incredibly slow, and so forth. I was in the college prep courses, but they weren't really challenging. I know people who kind of thought American was a joke, too. So it's not just me. However, there are a lot of similar programs out there. I have a friend who does Penn Foster; she really likes it. It's correspondence but it's through the internet. I would recommend doing research on the different types of homeschool programs. Some are like online public schools, complete with an interactive student body, teachers, and staff. Others are on a more individual basis, with you working mostly on your own and at your own pace. It all depends on your circumstances.
