I think you can play Mediveal II: Total War over lan for Multiplayer, as well as the Age Of Empires games. I think, at least. And I don't beleive you need that good of a computer, though some things might be hard to run on both games without one.

You could play runescape. Just go to Runescape.com and you can play for free! I played on a very old PC with it. The graphics arn't so good but I enjoyed the game

For a network at home you can play Warcraft II, or Starcraft, both of those allow mutliplayer against each other over a connected network. We used to each be in a different room at my dads house and play each other. You choose a map, and number of players (including computer players) and then you are each put in a different place, you mine for gold, build up your 'town' build soldiers and the goal is to be the last one standing. Warcraft II will allow 3 players per 1 CD (just install it on each PC)... Starcraft will require a copy of the CD in each PC that is being used. Directions are straight forward.
