I'm not familiar with Muscle Milk - but for a pre-workout food the best is something containing protein and some simple sugars - so a nice, sweet protein shake would do it. Simple sugars provide rapid energy for the actual workout, while the protein gets into your system to be used just as soon as your muscles need it for rebuilding.
