Well, you can still use 95/98, just as long as you dont want to use the internet, or new devices. I know systems and people still perfectly content on 80's era computers and software, because it flawlessly does what they need it to do. (a Planetarium for those who are wondering)
But look how long it took for 95 and 98 to become obsolete, a good 10-11 years or so (98 was based on 95). XP was released late 2001 (based on WIndows 2000), thus it is alot more modern, and I think it will stick around a bit longer than 98 did, as 98 was crippled by sudden growth of networking and internet protocols and behaviour.
I think around 2010 we will be "forced" to go to Vista but by then Vista will have ironed itself out, and we probably would have made the move already.
On January 31, 2009, Windows XP will no longer be supported.
Until programs force us to use Vista. Microsoft is already trying to do this with Halo 2 game running only on Vista.
