I won't answer the question directly, but I will comment on it. Other answerers have picked various companies (Kodak, Coca-Cola, Berkshire Hathaway, etc.) and those companies have been quite successful. However, what needs to be recognized is that they've all had dozens or hundreds of competitors. So if you *averaged* all the people who made millions investing in Coca-Cola with all the people who invested in Bob's Soda Company (and lost all their money), the *overall* return would be quite modest. Also, over the long term, all these companies tend to have unexceptional returns. The only real source of high profits is scarcity power (e.g. pharmaceutical company patents, MicroSnot's proprietary file formats, etc.). In almost all businesses, scarcity power is impossible to maintain over the long term. One prototypical example: British Railways. If you bought stock on day 1 of their existence until today, you'd have averaged about 5% annual return (scarcely better than a bank account).
