All I know is that the woman has no idea what the word ironic actually means. The song has always driven me nuts because of that. You'd think someone would have told her before she put it on an album???

It's neither. The title "Ironic" is ironic seeing as the song isn't ironic at all! That's the point of the whole song... or so I think.

Having way too much free time on my hands at the moment I would like to deconstruct what I think it's Ironic and what's not on that song. "An old man turned ninety-eight He won the lottery and died the next day" Yes, that's Ironic "It's a black fly in your Chardonnay" Not Ironic, poor service. "It's a death row pardon two minutes too late" That's a bummer. "It's like rain on your wedding day" If it's outdoors that's bad planning. "It's a free ride when you've already paid" You should ask for your money back. "It's the good advice that you just didn't take" May be ironic may be stubborness. "Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye He waited his whole damn life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down he thought "Well isn't this nice..." Agreed: Ironic. "A traffic jam when you're already late" Tough break, not ironic. "A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break" What, you just noticed that one? "It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife" Moronic. (Worst line in the song by far). "It's meeting the man of my dreams And then meeting his beautiful wife" Too bad. Feel free to disagree on any of these. : )

Rain on your wedding day would be ironic if you had changed the wedding date a couple of times after looking at the weather forecast and moved it to a new date where the forecast said it was less likely to rain. Otherwise it's just bad luck. I was at a wedding on Saturday where it was raining, thunder started rolling as they were signing the register... now THAT is foreshadowing!

Really none of that song is ironic...most of it is catastrophically sorrowful, or a really strange coincidence, but none of it is ironic...the thing is, alanis is smart enough to know that...therefore, the irony is, this whole song about being ironic, is not ironic...seriously
