  • I strongly agree with you Rosie. The pride to show off is rather not a good thing to do, although you may have done the right. I think that it is best to do it quietly. The rewards for doing it quiet will be in heaven rather than earth, for they last longer in the long run.
  • I agree with the saying that you shouldn't let the right hand know what the left is doing..sometimes I am so proud of myself for something I did and yes it is hard to keep it to myself but I get more blessings keeping my mouth shut.
  • I don't think having satisfaction in a job well done is wrong; but, pride in that accomplishment is trickier. Pride makes us believe that it's we who have accomplished the thing on our own; and, that really never happens. Everything we do and have comes to us because of all sorts of reasons. We should always remember to be grateful for those people and things that have contributed to our success. I think that's what that passage is really saying. If we let pride into our lives we will lose sight of the blessings we've gotten along the way. That will lead, eventually, down the path to destruction. This is a great question, Rosie. You never cease to amaze me.
  • What I think is that it helps to read the entire verse in order to understand it (Proverbs 16:18) "Pride goeth before a fall, and a haughty spirit (arrogant attitude) before destruction". The writer meant false, inflated pride in yourself, your accomplishments, your possessions, whatever. That's different from the quiet, contented assurance you feel when you've reached a goal and/or done a good job. The writer referred to the kind of pride that feeds someone's ego and tells him he's better than other people. That's dangerous in God's eyes because it insidiously pulls someone into this world and away from God. The idea that material goods, awards, achievements, etc. are the most important things in life is damaging on a fundamental level because it opens the door to an even deadlier-to-the-soul idea - the LOVE of money - something the Bible describes as "the root of all evil".
  • You are totally contradicting yourself.
