The Jewish religion was first revealed to Abraham by God, who told him he must go from Iraq (Haran) to Canaan (modern Israel) and God would make of him a nation, a family, and from him all the world would be blessed. Abraham became the Father of the Jewish people, who were the people through whom the Messiah or Chosen One would come to restore the broken relationship between humans and God. This descent went through Isaac,Abraham's heir, to Jacob, and to his twelve sons, who became the ancestors of the 12 tribes of Israel. Israel went into Egypt during a severe drought, and was then enslaved. God brought them out 400 years later, headed by Moses, who took them through the Red Sea and received the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. The rest of the Old Testament deals with the gradual unveiling of God's rescue plan for humanity, in the figure of the Messiah. You see the consolidation of God's chosen people, Israel, into a nation, the birth of a royal family, of which the best King was David and the problems of Israel's disobedience to God. At the end of what is known as the Old Testament, it was a time of waiting for the Messiah. Christianity is based on the person of Jesus, who was the Messiah, the Chosen One, the fulfiller of the prophecies that God gave to Abraham, Moses and the Prophets. It deals with His life, his sacrificial death on behalf of humanity, and his resurrection, which is the proof that he is, indeed, the Messiah, the Son of God and descendant of David. There is also teaching on how to live as a follower of Jesus, and prophecy of the Second Coming of Jesus, which will end the world and wipe out all sin and suffering. Now Islam....Islam claims to be a fulfilment of both these religions, but really has no historical tie, except that the Arab people are probably descended from A son of Abraham, Ishmael. Islam claims that The Jews and Christians altered their Scriptures to change the fact that it was Ishmael who was the chosen child of Abraham, and that they have also changed the Scriptures to point to the Jews as the Chosen People, whereas, to Islam, it was the Arabs. They also claim that Christians changed their New testament to wrongly claim that Jesus was the Son of God, which they see as blasphemy. They say that Jesus predicted Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. Nevertheless,Islam makes use of major stories from the Old Testament and altered stories from the NT to support its claim that all the OT prophets pointed to Muhammad. These stories are taken completely out of historical context, as if these prophets (who include Abraham, Moses, David and Jonah) were Arabs and Muslims, when they were Jews and are all buried in Israel. Islam denies the death and resurrection of Jesus, while saying that Jesus was a prophet who predicted Mohammed.
