  • Try reinstalling the drivers for it.
  • If it's a cordless mouse try changing the batteries. Also make sure the IR reciever has good LOS to the mouse.
  • After Windows boots, right click on the task bar and open task manager. Click the processes tab and click the CPU header to sort the list by CPU usage until the list is in the order with the most CPU usage at the top of the list. When the mouse freezes, watch to see what process if any is pegging CPU usage. If nothing's happening in the list when the freeze occurs, it's probably a driver issue.
  • If it is not a cordless mouse, flip it over and take off the covering over the ball. Take out the ball and wipe it off with rubbing alchohol. Also be sure to wipe down the inside of it. Sometimes things get on the inside of that part and make the ball stick. A good cleaning should do the trick.

  • My mouse keeps freezing up and I have had it happen with a cordless mouse and a microsoft mouse on usb. It happens for no reason at all and when it happens no mouse wil work until I force the computer to shut down and then bring it back up. I chatted with HP (we have hp computers) and they gave me a pacth to install and it didn't work either. I am using XP and have for 5 years with no problems til now with the mouse issue.
  • My thinking on this issue is: corrupt driver registry error or something as simple as tracing the mouse cord and finding that it has a kink in it, this can cause small short off/on as cord is moved. can happen as most mouse cords are run in a way that they can be pinch very easy, either up by sliding tray for key board or down by tower and they get pinch under tower or between tower and desk etc. check for a bent pin where mouse plugs in on cord if anybody needs a registry repair program let me know or one that will help your search for drivers.
