  • Well I was taught to distinguish "e.g." as "for example", and "i.e." for "that is". So I use "i.e." when I'm defining something or explaining it, and "e.g." when providing an illustrating example or instance.
  • i.e. is 'id est', which means 'that is (to say), whereas e.g. means 'exempli gratia' - 'for the sake of example' Wikipedia gives a couple of good practical examples: e.g. is used before giving examples of something : I have lots of favorite colors, e.g., blue, green, and hot pink. i.e. is used before clarifying the meaning of something when elaborating, specifying, or explaining rather than when giving examples : I can't decide on just one favorite color, i.e., I have many favorite colors.
  • "e.g." means "for example." It's used to make the reader aware that an example of will follow. For example: Labyrinth fish build bubble nests. (e.g. Betta fish.) "i.e." means "that is." It is a way of restating what you have said previously. An example of that is: Betta fish build bubble nests i.e. they make nests out of bubbles.
