  • It's a really grey area. Technically, yes, you could get charged for criminal trespass, since you'd have to open a mailbox that is no longer your property to retrieve the mail. The correct legal thing to do is to ask the new householders to keep an eye out for mail sent to you, and either forward it (offer to reimburse them for this) or to return it marked "Return to sender - addressee moved". If you open a mailbox that doesn't belong to you, then you have committed a crime even if the mailbox subsequently holds mail addressed to you, as the crime is to tamper with someone elses mailbox, not the mail itself.
