  • IT happened to me, the discs are scratched by the flat cable connected to the lens. When the lens gets near the center of the disc, that flat cable goes up a little and touches the disc, and ...surprise you get a scratched disc.
  • Are the discs actually being scratched? The PS2 disc drive has a limited lifespan and tends to deteriorate after a few years. Mine gave up the ghost after experiencing similar symptoms (it went through stages with problems first occurring with audio CDs, then CD-ROMs, then DVD movies and finally DVD-ROMs stopped working). Try cleaning the lens first with a little alcohol, but if that doesn't work I suspect you'll have to have the console repaired/replaced. I believe it can be quite expensive to have a new disc drive installed, and this may not be much better value than just replacing the console.
