This is a surprisingly interesting question ! I never thought of this before. I guess in the beginning this just worked out best because at night we can not see very well so that was just the naturally feasible time to sleep and regenerate.

The ancient people who realised that they couldn't see to hunt animals and farm the land when it was dark.

Evolution. We are not well adapted to hunt by night.

I think the fact that most large predators hunt at night coupled with poor night vision probably had something to do with it.

Actually our bodies are designed this way. When they try to change it to the reverse our bodies know somehow and don't do as well. There was a very interesting study done on someone who lived in a cave, an experiment a few years ago. I think it was a French lady. SHe had nothing to tell her it was day or night and they would wonder what would happen. They tried delaying and changing when she would sleep and when she'd be awake. But she always reverted back naturally to our day and night that she was used to. Sometimes she would lean into a 25 hour day but her body seemed to correct itself back to 24. It was an amazing study.
