My son eats a wide variety of foods and he is very willing to try new things. I don't know if it is something we did, or just his personality. I will say that once he was eating regular food, we always fed him what we were eating. We never said "Oh, he's just a kid, he won't like that so let's throw some chicken fingers on the table for him." Don't get me wrong, he likes chicken fingers, but he also likes sushi (even more than we do), Thai, Indian, Chinese... I think also you should never say to a child "you won't like that." I have actually heard adults say that. Let them try it, they may not like it, but they might. Don't act like a food is weird before they have a chance to make thier own decision. Also, with young children, they need to try something 3-4 times before you can say they really don't like it. One time isn't enough. I also think you need to avoid control issues at dinner time. I never forced my son to eat. That didn't mean he was allowed to dictate what was for dinner, but I didn't force him to eat it right then. If he said he wasn't hungry I didn't force feed him. I said "ok, you don't have to eat now, let me know when you're hungry and I'll heat this up for you." We did go through a period where he didn't ever want to eat at dinner time, so he did HAVE to sit at the table with the family, but he didn't have to eat. (He usually did though.)
