I don't think bad things should be done in order that some good come of it -- the end justifying the means -- but I think something good can be drawn out of any bad thing. There's a lesson, enlightenment or knowledge in every problem.

There's nothing in the world that is purely bad or purely good... even Joseph Stalin did some good things. The reason we THINK there's pure good or pure evil is because we tend to think in abstractions, and leave reality laying off to the side unexamined in our thinking. So it's really important to be aware of when we've drifted off into abstractions and taken leave of reality -- then we can see things as they are. That makes the job of opposing evil and promoting good much easier, because we don't get tangled up in theoretical knots so much... we're more able to SEE a situation as it is and act in accord with our values, minimizing the bad and maximizing the good, without thinking we'll ever eliminate the bad entirely.
