This may or may not be the same phenomenon but many people experience what are called myoclonic or hypnic twitches or jerks. Basically, just as they fall asleep, the whole body jerks, sometimes forcefully enough to wake up the person. I myself get them occasionally. Some people also have an accompanying falling sensation, though not everybody seems to. There are several theories about why this occurs but one theory is that it is an old defence system from when our genetic ancesters lived in trees, to prevent them from falling out when going to sleep and having an injury. I have this too. When I dream, occasionally I trip or fall or something. Then my body twitches and it feels like I fell over.
