I am trying to figure that out myself, most say that it is in 1965, as on march 8 the first two marine battalions land to defend Danang airfield, they were the first American combat troops in Vietnam. But remember that the united sates had bomb North Vietnam in 1964 after North Vietnamese patrol boats attack the "Maddox" an American destroyer. IF your trying to talk about the Indochina war, which started with the French the official date is 1946. The Vietnam war, "endend" for the US with the "cease-fire agreements" in 1973, signed on january 27. But the War enededin 1975 as Saigon was captured by communists on april 30.
