G'day Kevin, Thank you for your question. There were several reasons, Firstly, the believed that Germany couldn't send troops and tanks through the Ardennes Forest. Secondly, they believed that the Germans wouldn't infringe the neutrality of Belgium and the Netherlands which was again mistaken. Thirdly, the French Army was supposed to support the line but that failed to happen. The Maginot Line was twice bypassed in World War II - once by the Germans in 1940 and once by the Allies in 1944. The Germans had a counterattack plan in 1944 in the battle of the Ardennes. France maintained the Maginot Line until its withdrawal from NATO in the 1960s. I have attached sources for your reference.
