Yes, most times it will calm the person and get them to think reasonably or it will make the other angry person feel guilty for being so out of control or violent. They tend to look bad when you don't react to their vileness

Maybe 90% of the time, yes. It's hard to argue when nobody else is.

It depends on the person. Some people just seem to have a need to fight. Such people can take even the most innocent remark as an insult and away they go. In such situations, nothing that anyone says will calm the person. Such people just seem to like being angry. Fortunately, these types of personalities seem to be in the minority. So, most of the time a soft word will turn away wrath.
