Maybe the same reason people do on Answerbag...they're looking for sympathy, kindness, or they just want people to understand them and their behaviour.

Because the producers and directors pay them to, and 90% of that crap is scripted anyway.

For me, it would really depend on the show. I don't care what the issue is - I'm NOT taking it to Jerry Springer. But some of the other shows I might, if the topic applied to me. Maury and Tyra are bit into giving you a bunch or free stuff on a many of the shows.

Why do they open their lives on this site? People like to be heard, they want validation. Oddly enough, society is more isolated than ever since the advent of the home ocmputer, so the need to be heard is even greater.

They are all dumb asses, or get paid to pretend they have these “problems”.
