I want to purchase some high-quality (i.e. long lasting) formal (men's) shoes that are comfortable but specifically useful for ballroom dancing as well as normal dress-up occasions (non-black-tie). What are good brands/stores to consider, and why?

Dock martin used to put out a sturdy but formal looking shoe which shines up nicely, is extremely comfortable and lasted forever. They also put out a boot and ankle high boot - or did. Been a while since I went shoe shopping - like ten years or so ;)

You may want to try out the men's black patent slip-on dress pumps made by Georgio Brutini. These dress shoes are so simple in design it had nothing on it. The shoe has a bit of a lower vamp which means that you can see a bit of your dress socks as you put the shoes on. They also come in different colours and you can get them at Zappos.com.
