No, apparently spending a few minutes in the microwave does kill nearly all the germs on a dish sponge. They will die above a certain temperature like any other living thing. Of course, you DO need to switch the microwave on...

Yep, it works! Either five minutes in the microwave or a cycle through the dishwasher. Both reach high enough temperatures to kill the little buggers!

Yes it supposedly works, but you have to make sure the sponge is wet. I heard of someone setting their microwave on fire because they put a dry sponge in there (I don't know if it's true, I just heard it, but it does make sense that it would do that). Also, I believe it only needs to be nuked for 30 seconds. Five minutes sounds a little long.
