  • I don't have a specific anthem, but I like songs that reflect some of my values. I really don't seek out other atheists specifically, so the idea of connecting to them through an anthem doesn't appeal to me. Songs that reflect some of my values: "Take It to the Limit" by the Eagles; "What's Going On", Marvin Gaye; "When I'm 64", the Beatles; "The Rose", Bette Midler; "Think", Aretha Franklin. None of these embody my philosophy but they do speak to some of my values.

  • I can't really think of any songs that actually celebrate the fact that there is no God, if you like. I suppose Imagine by John Lennon suggests that there isn't a God, and I do love that song, but I wouldn't call it my anthem.
  • There's not really an anthem that atheists use to feel connected to one another except in a general human way. In terms of a song that sums up an atheist's view of life, John Lennon's "Imagine" does wonderfully. He just totally captures my view. If there was no such thing as "heaven", for example, people would have to live their lives the best they could on earth and help each other to live well, rather than waving off things like illness and poverty and hunger as okay because "they'll be in heaven someday". Oh hell, I'll just let him say it: Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today... Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one
  • Since Atheism isn't an organized religion in the sense that Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc. is, we don't have a set of songs that unite us. But I think may skeptics of our conventional notion of God would relate to the lyrics of Depeche Mode's Blasphemous Rumours: Girl of 16 Whole life ahead of her Slashed her wrists Bored with life Didn't succeed Thank the lord For small mercies Fighting back the tears Mother reads the note again 16 candles burn in her mind She takes the blame It's always the same She goes down on her knees And prays I don't want to start Any blasphemous rumours But I think that God's Got a sick sense of humour And when I die I expect to find Him laughing Girl of 18 Fell in love with everything Found new life In Jesus Christ Hit by a car Ended up On a life support machine Summer's day As she passed away Birds were singing In the summer sky Then came the rain And once again A tear fell From her mother's eye . . .
  • No, we don't have an anthem, as we are not an organized religion, let alone a religion at all. But, here is one of my favorite atheist songs...... Tool ~ Opiate Choices always were a problem for you. What you need is someone strong to guide you. Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow, what you need is someone strong to use you... like me, like me. If you want to get your soul to heaven, trust in me. Don't judge or question. You are broken now, but faith can heal you. Just do everything I tell you to do. Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow. Let me lay my holy hand upon you. My God's will becomes me. When he speaks out, he speaks through me. He has needs like I do. We both want to rape you. Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life. Open my eyes and blind me with your light and your lies.
  • strange question... there aren't any that I know of but man would that rock !!! I'm off to compose "Ode to Physics"...
  • The closest thing to an "anthem" Atheists have is John Lennon's "Imagine." Which is a masterpiece by the way. In all reality, for the most part, songs with an Atheist message wouldn't get much of a chance of heavy airplay from medias run by people who do believe in God now would they? That's the difference between Atheism and organized religions, the entire concept of atheism is against the entire concept of organized religion, hence it is neither organized nor a religion. It kind of gives O.R.'s the advantage of monopolizing the influence market.
  • Not really an anthem but I like this one. The The "Violence of Truth" What is Evil? What is Love? What is Evil? What is Love? What is Evil? What is Love? What is Evil? What is Love? What is Evil? What is Evil? What is Love? What is Evil? Something's telling you to wake up and salute The dangers of obedience and violence of truth Something's telling you to wake up and salute The dangers of obedience and violence of truth God is Evil God is Love God is the force that possesses us God is beauty God is truth God is the force that is watching over you What is Evil? What is Love? What is Evil? What is Love? What is Evil? What is Love?
  • Here's another one - the first verse of "Sentimental Man" by the Dismemberment Plan: There is no heaven and there's no hell No limbo in-between -- I think it's all a lie Just a white light out to velvet black and back to neutral gray -- that's all when we die (when we die, when we die) There is no fate that divides our day no spirits hard at work, no unseen hand at play people talk like it's a given thing I don't know what they mean -- nor, I suspect, do they Well I guess that's OK But how do you know I'm not a sentimental man? is it really so hard to see these things? I guess it is I couldn't tell you why, I think it's right there nobody's perfect, but I'm doing what I can and you best believe I'll keep it real
  • If not, I have a suggestion : P: http://www.youtube.com/v/IIYVfyZV72A&hl=en&fs=1">
  • good song>_< <3 modest mouse (although this statement in know way answers ur question...just thought id throuw that in here)
  • well there's the song by Kansas about Einstein. its the one that says " before he could tell us he died" i forget the name but its a great song. the lenon imagine song is wayyyyyy too hippie- ish for me.
  • Atheists wouldn't have an anthem because atheists are not an organized religion, we are not part of a unit, institution or organization, we are individuals, and though our beliefs (or lack therof) are similar we do not congregate or find meaning in being a group...so we couldn't have an anthem. Being part of such a thing would kind of partially defeat the purpose of what being an atheist is all about. Many Atheists like myself don't just disbelieve in god and christ, we oppose the ideals of organized religion. We prefer to be individuals who think and act on our own ethics and morality instead of having someone tell us what that is and hold us to their standards....we get enough of that from the government.
  • I'll take this one.
  • Have you ever stopped to think that unlike those who cannot stand on their own two feet, who need to be a part of a flock, that an atheist is the exact opposite? We don't need imaginary friends, we are totally capable people with minds of our own, the last thing we need are things to make us feel part of something. We fly like Eagles, we're not a pack of Turkeys. We're very happy out here being good, strong, useful individuals, not needing anyone or anything to survive. I'm sorry if your control freak ways can't allow you to live with that, but in my case anyway, you're just going to have to. Please dump your insecurities on someone else, I'm flat out having a life here.
  • I've always liked "lets go fly a kite" on Merry Poppins. I'd celebrate that one.
  • Obviously you are starving for the sacred on some level. Good luck. Sit in a chair, sit a long, long time and clear your mind of all thoughts. When you reach that level, what is left? That, no mind, beyond mind, is God consciousness. How can you explain that experience to another? I bet you don't even take the time to try, because it is a very focused and intense exercise. It's easier to buy the Modest Mouse album and let some muscians tell you how to think.
  • Atheists don't have a common belief. The only thing that links them is not believing in God(s). Beyond that, some are politically liberal while others are conservative. Some are art freaks while others are into sports. Some are rationalists while others simply don't feel the presence. Some thought long and hard and searched for a god that proved not to be there while others never spent a minute on the issue... etc... etc... and so forth. As such, an anthem would be mighty tough. +5
