  • In the book The Hinge of Fate, Winston Churchill lamented the fact that people were very inexact on these terms. The Near East clusters around Israel, he wrote, and the Far East would be China, Japan, and what was then called Indo-China, what we call Southeast Asia. South Asia--Burma and India--should be called the East, and everything between them and the Near East should be the Middle East. There is a logic to it!
