Was Thompson an authentic journalist? For example, Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail seemed like serious journalism. Or was it just all made up?

Of course Hunters authentic! Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail has been hailed as the most accurate account of the ill-fated 1972 presidential election. If nothing else Hunter S. was authentic. Some of his stuff may seem a little trippy due to the extensive drug use but cut it out and you have cold hard truth.

Well yes! He had a Dr in journalism! If he wasnt serious about it, he wouldnt have studied it for half his life. He wrote for many magazines such as The Rolling Stone and he made a living out of journalism before turning to writing novels.

A true journalist doesn't make himself part of the story that he is reporting on. It prevents him from being a independant observer. Hunter was a fabulous and entertaining writer, but I don't believe that he was a true journalist.

Of course! You just have to have the intellect to cut through his extensive little sidetracks and seemingly random fits of hyperboly, to get to the cold hard truth incased within. And believe me, he does an incredible job of getting that truth down accurately.
