  • This is a good question. However, I don't know that their is a good doctrinal answer to it. So, what I am about to write is more in the realm of personal speculation. It starts with what we do know, viz., God knows everything. He knows everyone who has ever lived and to whom they are related. My speculation is that, during the thousand years that Jesus will personally reign here on Earth, we will have access to the "heavenly records" to fill in the gaps in our Earthly records. Whether this is really how it will happen, I don't know, but I do know that God will provide a way for all to receive their ordinances. Anything less would be unjust.
  • Glenn answered the question quite correctly. I don't the resources in front of me to answer the question with the proper source (quote by Prophet, Apostles, or other General Authority, and if you want one just let me know). However, think about this, communication from the spirit world is an essential part of The LDS Church. It is through this kind of communication that our Prophet is able to be given direction by God to lead the Kingdom of God on the earth. So therefore, reason (see Doctrine and Covenants (D&C) section 50 verse 12, http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/50/12#12) dictates that those who have passed on (and had their lives recorded in the Book of Life, D&C 128:7, http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/128/7#7) will be able to communicate the knowledge that we need to do their work by proxy in the Temple.
