  • I am unaware of any reference in the Bible that even suggests the concept of a "mother in heaven." I looked at Jer. 15:10. The verse before and the following verse are clearly "the Lord says," but verse 10 appears only to be the writer referring to his own mother while lamenting his own birth because everybody curses and contends against him. I believe the general idea comes from "liberal theology" which allows people to change what they believe about the Bible based on cultural norms. The reasoning would go something like this: Since the society at the time was patriarchal, naturally the writers used partiarchal images. Since modern scholars have moved beyond that, they can reinterpret ideas like the Fatherhood of God as motherhood or anything else they find more satisfactory.
  • Catholics try to use Revelation 12:1 to support their Mary-worship, but this clearly ignores several factors. First of all, the woman there is one of 2 spoken of in Revelation, the other is the harlot of babylon, which in Revelation 17:18 is specifically said to be symbolic for a great city. If one is symbolic, why not the other? Furthermore, the prophecy is a direct restating of the prophecy in Isaiah 66:7-12, where the woman is said to be Jerusalem. This makes sense since Jerusalem is often spoken of as if a female, symbolically. Furthermore, an examination of Revelation 12:1 speaks of the woman being clothed with 12 stars and the sun and the moon, a direct reference to Joseph's dream back in Genesis 37:9. There we see the 12 stars stand for Joseph and his brothers, the 12 tribes of Israel, and the moon and sun stand for their parents, Abraham and Sarah. Thus the woman stands for Jerusalem, the redeemed nation of Israel, or the Church/Israel, however you look at it. But it's clearly not speaking of a literal woman.
  • In my opinion and having read the bible several times. I have not seen any evidence to support the thought of a heavenly mother. Joe
  • When asking this question you have to be aware that the bible that we read was agreed by the romans, and they included those gospels that seemed to agree most with each other. Now, when you are looking for quotes that support what you want to prove, you can usually find a reference in the bible anyway, even though there will be other passages that usually support the opposite hypothesis. When you take the Gnostic Gospels and others, such as Thomas' Gospel, into account then you can evidence for whatever findings you want. The other thing to take into account is that the bible went through centuries of male domination, where references to women in any position of power were removed. Some laymen might dispute this, but it has been admitted by the highest levels of religious authority. This makes it more difficult to show how women should have been represented. In fact, that is one of my own personal problems with our 'Christian' religion. That those who blindly follow the dogma never question why Mary should be placed so highly while most other female figures are portrayed as whores, harlots, or otherwise weak-willed. We are only now rediscovering that we need our partners on an equal footing, and religion held this down for so long. I feel sorry for God, having to deal with these people to get His message across.
  • A heavenly mother is a symbolic reference to the Spiritual City of Jeruseleum, which embodies the total church of Christ's true believers. It as a body of believers has motherly attributes... Nurturing, correcting, feeding, life- supporting, teaching, etc. In this way we can clearly give good and careful respect to the Eclessia (the body that assembles!), as we would our mother.
  • God transcends gender and can be referred to as He or She. The Jewish male-dominated society influenced the tradition of referring to God as male. However, the same Jewish tradition refers to the Wisdom of God as female (all through the book of Wisdom. Christians would call Her the Holy Spirit. The Bible actually as several images of God as female: Genesis 1:26-27 Women and Men created in God’s image “Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness…So God created humankind in God’s image, in the image of God s/he created them; male and female God created them.” Hosea 11:3-4 God described as a mother God: “Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I who took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them.” Hosea 13:8 God described as a mother bear God: “I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs…” Deuteronomy 32:11-12 God described as a mother eagle “As an eagle stirs up its nest, and hovers over its young as it spreads its wings, takes them up and bears them aloft on its pinions, the Lord alone guided him…” Deuteronomy 32:18 God who gives birth “You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.” Isaiah 66:13 God as a comforting mother God: “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” Isaiah 49:15 God compared to a nursing mother God: “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” Isaiah 42:14 God as a woman in labor God: “For a long time I have held my peace, I have kept myself still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor, I will gasp and pant.” Jeremiah 44:25 Queen of Heaven “Thus says…the God of Israel: You and your wives have accomplished in deeds what you declared in words, ‘We are determined to …make offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out libations to her.’ By all means, keep your vows and make your libations!” Psalm131:2 God as a Mother “But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.” Psalm 123:2 God compared to a woman “As the eyes of a servant look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until God has mercy on us.” Matthew 23:37 and Luke 13:34 God as a Mother Hen Jesus: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” Immediately after describing God as the Good Shepherd, Jesus describes God as a woman looking for her lost coin (Luke 15:8-10): Jesus: “Or what woman having ten silver coins, is she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” With love in Christ.
