Most if not all Buddhists (at least in the West) would not consider it bad luck to buy a Buddha statue. Personally, I consider the idea of "luck" to be an un-Buddhist concept - rather we should focus on how our actions really help or hurt us and others. Karma is about simple cause-and-effect relationships, not collecting brownie points with some sort of deity. Whatever the case, I have never experienced anything I'd call bad luck on account of the several statues I have. Buddha statues should not be called "idols" since that using that term insinuates that Buddha is worshipped as a god - which he is not except in rare cases (there are many diverse flavors of Buddhism). Since "idol" is often used to refer to a "false god" (see American Heritage Dictionary), it is advisable to avoid using the word unless your intention is to offend the members of a certain religion (which I don't suggest).

If you buy buddhist relics from an importer of Chinese booty from ransacked tibetan monasteries...then proudly display them as a supporter of Buddhism or Tibet...maybe not bad luck, but bad karma certainly.
