Read in a Skousen book, don't remember which one, slim volume from around 1939, that the idea going around (back then) that there would be very few people, like the fingers on one hand, who would be heading to outer darkness, was false, and that there would be a greater number there than we would suppose. Back to my own thoughts now: I can image for example a class of character, like the dissenter leaders of the city of Ammonihah, who would qualify -- people who had once had the gift of the Holy Ghost, and who would be capable of witnessing and abetting the crucifixion of Christ had they been present.

Outer darkness is reserved for Satan, his angels, and those who sin against the Holy Ghost. In order to be able to sin against the Holy Ghost, a person must first gain a sure knowledge of the truthfulness of the gospel and then deny it. This has been likened to someone saying that there is no sun at noon on a clear day. A person who commits this sin would be someone who would have been party to the crucifixion of Jesus while having full knowledge that He was the Savior and the Son of God. The vast majority of us never reach this level of knowledge in this life. Therefore, most of us are incapable of sinning against the Holy Ghost. So, a person is not going to go to Outer Darkness just because he leaves the Church. If this person should then start actually preaching against the Church, then they may be getting close to the line, but that is between them and God. Only God knows if someone has actually crossed that line.

    Indyguy1183,

No, the Gift of the Holy Ghost does not, in and of itself, convey a sure knowledge of the truth of the Gospel. Even with this gift we must still walk by faith. However, as we grow in the faith, it may eventually lead to a sure knowledge.

Some of them might. As others have said, it really depends on how much they knew before apostatizing—and whether or not they’re willing to repent and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Shall we not dilly-dattle around the truth of the matter though, while outer darkness is reserved for those who commit the unpardonable sin, the atonement doesn't fully apply to that ex-mormon because his sins are unresolved. The part of the atonement that does apply to that person is the gain of immortality. The person at question is required to endure a perging proccess and must atone for his/her own sins as Christ did, DandC 19. Then judgement comes upon them and God places them where He see's fit. This is also the same for all members even who die in their sins. So while Ex-members will not under most circumstances go to outer darkness, It's still not a perferable situation. Does this same rule apply to non-members who dies having unknowingly sinned? No.

This is a case-by-case issue. Because you are ex mormon does not guarantee that you go straight to outer darkness.

Outer darkness is reserved for only those who commit the unpardonable sin.
