According to the New Catholic Encyclopedia (Thomson Gale, 2003), vol. 15, "Patron Saints," saints were often associated with the geographical area where they were buried. They then became associated with those who venerated the saint in those areas. Those saints then became seen as special intercessors for that group of people, who sometimes followed trades or other activities. In the Middle Ages Catholics broadened this so that some aspect of the saint's life, works or death became part of the associations for that saint. In the 20th century saints were declared by the church as associated with some group, beginning with the 1917 Code of Canon Law which mentions titles for saints. These are names to distinguish churches one from another. A title which is also the name of a saint allows the saint to be called a patron.
