  • Lignans are naturally occurring polyphenols, or antioxidants, found throughout the plant kingdom in a wide range of foods. Lignans are beneficial for a variety of health issues and are being studied and used as treatment for the prevention of cancers and other diseases.

    Description

According to Dr. Maoshing Ni in his book, "Second Spring," lignans have phytoestrogen properties. As a result, lignans help to improve the levels of good estrogen in the body, such as estradiol.

    Benefits

Lignans are beneficial for treating heart disease, vaginal dryness and bone loss. Lignans are also beneficial for maintaining a healthy ratio of testosterone to its cousin known as DHT (dihydrotestosterone), according to Dr. Ni.

    Cancer Prevention

According to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, lignans are being studied and used as treatment in the prevention of certain cancers. These hormone-associated cancers include breast cancer, endometrial and ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer.

    Disease Prevention

The Linus Pauling Institute also reports the use of lignans to prevent cardiovascular disease. Research is being conducted for the use of lignans as a treatment for osteoporosis.

    Sources

Flaxseeds are the richest source of lignans. Other sources include seeds such as sesame, poppy, sunflower and pumpkin, whole grains such as rye, barley and oats, as well as bran, beans and fruits.
