  • Snoring can be detrimental in multiple ways. Snoring may reduce the amount of time you are able to sleep and the quality of the sleep you get, leading to fatigue and other symptoms related to lack of sleep. In addition to these problems, snoring may keep your partner from sleeping, even leading to a strain on the relationship. Snoring problems occur most frequently for men and the overweight. Several natural remedies can reduce problem snoring. If your snoring problem does not improve with these measures, see a doctor.

    Clear Congestion

Nasal congestion is a common culprit of snoring. Clear your nasal passages before bed. It may be beneficial to use a steam vaporizer or to place a towel over your head with a pot of hot, steaming water. Breathing in the steam loosens mucus to clear the passages.

    Sleep on Your Side

Snoring most often occurs when you sleep on your back, because your tongue can fall toward the back of your throat, obstructing air flow. Sleeping on your side will often remedy this issue. People with more advanced snoring issues may still have a snoring problem when sleeping in other positions.

    Avoid Sedatives

Sedatives like sleeping pills and alcohol inhibit the breathing response and can lead to snoring. Eliminate nightcaps, drinks before bed and other sedatives if at all possible. Cutting back may be enough to improve the problem if you aren't able to completely eliminate all sedatives.

    Lose Weight

Being overweight is another prevalent cause of snoring. The excess tissue around the neck creates problems. Losing 10 percent of body weight often can solve a snoring issue.

    Nasal Strips

While most snoring originates around the base of the soft palate, some snoring comes from the nose. This type of snoring may be improved by using nasal strips. These strips are worn outside the nose and open the nasal passages for improved air flow.
