  • Hewlett-Packard has developed the majority of its laptops with the same style and build for many years now, which makes taking them apart simple and easy. While it may look like a hefty task, pulling apart the insides couldn't be easier. This process may take longer than others, but just following at a steady pace and making sure you know how to put the computer back together will leave you educated and experienced with taking apart an HP laptop.

    Warnings and Tips

Have all of the power out of the computer; this includes removing the power cord, battery and, once those have been disconnected from the computer, holding the power button down for at least 5 seconds to get rid of any static electricity. You will also need a small screwdriver and steady hands to get many of the screws out. As you will see, these screws are tiny and can easily be lost if you are not careful with them. Keep in mind there are many parts attached to the computer, and breaking any of the wires could be hazardous to the laptop.

    Taking Apart the Laptop

Flip the laptop over so the bottom is facing up. There will be two removable compartments on the bottom, each having two screws; this is the memory and the hard drive. Remove all of the screws to take the covers off of them. Carefully lift the right side of the hard drive up and remove it from the motherboard then set it to the side. There is one screw holding in your optical drive above the memory slot, unscrew it and then pull out the entire drive. The memory is a bit more difficult to remove. There are latches on each side of the memory module, spread them, and the memory will pop up slightly, remove them by the edges, and make sure not to touch the memory itself at any time. You will also notice next to this is the Wi-Fi card, which will have its antennas hooked to it. Unsnap the gold connectors at the top of the antennas from the Wi-Fi card and then remove the two screws holding the Wi-Fi card in, and it will pull out for you. Underneath, where the battery is, are the screws to remove your sound and keyboard. Remove the five screws. Once these have been taken out, turn the laptop back over and open it. The top bezel is now free to be pulled out, but be careful as the top right has wires that will need to be removed. You can now pull the keyboard upwards, but be careful as the bottom of the keyboard is connected to a critical connector attached to the motherboard. Disconnect this connector only if you have to by moving the connector's locking tab slightly forward. The tab must stay attached to the connector and, if it breaks apart, it will leave you without a keyboard. It can then finally be pulled out to completely disassemble your laptop.
