  • When you buy a new computer, you need to copy data and settings saved on the old system to the new one. You can download most programs online and reinstall them, while you need to copy some other programs onto an external drive or CD or DVD and transfer them. However, copying AOL settings requires a slightly different method to ensure a seamless transition.

    Copying Settings

First, shut down AOL on your old system by going to the AOL System Information menu. Select "Utilities" in this menu and then select the "Close AOL" option. This effectively unlocks the "Organize" directory that contains your settings so you can copy it. Locate the "Organize" directory on your computer's hard drive. It is normally found under "Application Support," or you can do a "find" to locate it. Right-dlick the "Start" button, and then select "Find" or "Search." A pop-up window opens in which there are several fields. Type "organize" in the "Name" field and press "Enter." The computer returns a list of files that contain the word "organize" in the title. Identify the correct "Organize" directory in the AOL application support folder on the list. The process is similar if you have a Mac; however, you can do a "find" using the Spotlight program accessed by clicking on the magnifying glass on the upper right corner of your finder menu bar. Copy the whole "Organize" directory to a portable hard disc drive, thumb drive or other such device.

    Transferring Settings

Find where the existing "Organize" directory is in your application support folder for AOL (you can use the same "find" process described above). Copy the "Organize" directory to your new system by dragging the directory from your disk into this folder. Select "Yes" when the computer asks if you want to replace the file. This imports your existing settings. Restart AOL, and they should take effect.

    Getting Help

Certain programs can automate and streamline this process. These programs, which can be found online or purchased at a computer software store, eliminate the need to install a new version of AOL. Most of the programs do come with free customer service, although they cost money to buy. You can also contact AOL troubleshooting or online support for help in transferring your AOL settings, and they will assist you by talking you through the process at no cost.
