Acid reflux disease, or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), affects millions of Americans each year and occurs when stomach acid flows back into your windpipe. This is an uncomfortable and painful condition that can be controlled by eating habits.
Symptoms of Acid Reflux
According to the MayoClinic.com, the symptoms of acid reflux include a burning sensation in your chest (heartburn) or sometimes the throat, a sour taste in your mouth, chest pain, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), dry cough, hoarseness or sore throat, regurgitation of food or sour liquid (acid reflux), and the sensation of a lump in the throat.
Foods That Cause Acid Reflux
Foods that cause acid reflux are fried or fatty foods, alcohol, chocolate, mint, caffeine, citrus fruits and garlic. All other foods should be fine, if you doctor has approved them.
Foods That Have a Low Risk of Causing Acid Reflux
Dairy foods, low-fat meats and desserts, non-citrus fruits and vegetables generally do not cause acid reflux.
Considerations
In some individuals, acid reflux cannot be controlled by diet alone. Antacids or medicines that block acid production may be prescribed by your doctor.
Warning
If acid reflux is not controlled, it can lead to painful ulcers in the esophagus, trouble swallowing and esophageal cancer.
