    Early Life

    The Marquis de Lafayette was born Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier in 1757, and he quickly distinguished himself among French royalty for his Army service and his marriage to a relative of the king.

    Congressional Application

    The Marquis learned of the American Revolution from meetings with other nobility and arrived in 1777 to apply for a position with the Continental Army. Congress approved his application, promoting him to major general provided he would serve without pay.

    Washington's Staff

    Lafayette was assigned to Washington's staff, protecting the general from an early coup and offering intelligence and planning assistance.

    Negotiating French Support

    Lafayette returned to France in the fall of 1778, using much of his time to plead with his king to support the American Revolution. Along with the efforts of Benjamin Franklin, he succeeded in enlisting a division of men and the assistance of the French navy, paving the way for American victory.

    Post-Revolution Diplomacy

    After the Revolution, Lafayette provided assistance to Thomas Jefferson, then serving as ambassador to France. He returned to the United States in 1824 and lauded as a hero for his role in the Revolution.
