Sexually transmitted diseases or STDs can be a cause for serious concern. The wide variety of STDs leads to different types of testing, typically through examination and urine samples. Some STDs are curable, yet many are not. Treatment can help to combat and manage STDs, and knowledge prevents STDs from spreading.
Visual Inspection
Visual inspection of the genitals is a typical approach. The doctor will check for genital warts and other conditions, although not all STDs are readily visible. The doctor will also check for lice, crabs, sores and other defects.
Swabbing
The doctor may swab the genital area to check for genital warts that may not be readily visible. The swabbing highlights conditions the naked eye would not immediately catch.
Testing
Swabs are taken from the patient and fluids from the vagina, anus, throat, urethra, and penis may be tested for STDs. Various medications may be prescribed.
Repeat Examinations
In order to monitor STDs, regular checkups should be made to check for signs of spreading or infection. Many STDs, once diagnosed, will require repeat examinations as well.
When You Should Go
If rashes, itches, warts, sores or any other unusual symptoms develop, see a doctor immediately. Be specific and ask for what kinds of STDs the office tests for. If you even suspect you might have an STD, you should be examined immediately.
