<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Access is its Own Application
Microsoft Access is a relational database program, an application that some computer trainers describe as a "Spreadsheet in 3D." Although many of the Visual Basic programming commands common in Excel also work in Access, the program provides a different user interface that requires no Excel knowledge for proper use.
On the Other: Access and Excel Share Some Similarities
Some database experts, such as the programmers at VB123, point out that Excel functions as an effective back end to Microsoft Access. Programmers make this observation because Access stores data in tables that consist of rows and columns much like those found in Excel, and users proficient in Excel can use the spreadsheet application to quickly import bulk entries into an Access database.
Bottom Line
Though a working knowledge of Excel may benefit Access users, especially during intense processes such as bulk data entry, users do not need Excel experience to effectively use the Access database application.
