  • The state of New York makes getting a marriage license fairly easy. As long as the applicants meet eligibility requirements, they may apply in person or through the mail. The fee is $15 and proper identification must be shown. Before getting started, it helps to have a few tips.

    Eligibility Requirements

According to the New York Marriage Bureau, in order to apply for a marriage license, you must be a party to the marriage (bride or groom), or have written authorization from the wedding party. Attorneys of the bride and groom or law enforcement officers are also entitled to get a marriage license copy.

    In-Person Requests

According to the New York Marriage Bureau, you can get a certified marriage license copy from 1996 to present at any local office. If the marriage was performed before 1995, you may visit the Record Division, which is located at the Manhattan Office, 141 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013. When you visit the office, make sure to bring photo identification.

    Requests by Mail

You can request a certified marriage license by mail. Request an application by calling (212) 669-8090. Make sure to include a copy of your state issued identification card (or driver's license), military id or passport to prove your identity.

    Historic Records

Marriage records that are older then 50 years old are considered "historic." That means, records are available to the general public and eligibility requirements don't apply. Copies of these records can be found at the Manhattan Office, 141 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013. Another circumstance that wouldn't meet normal eligibility requirements is when the bride and groom are deceased. At this time, anyone who presents both birth certificates may have access to a copy of the marriage certificate.
