Online paralegal programs are legal educational programs leading to a certification or degree. Paralegals conduct legal research, writing and/or administrative support in diverse legal settings where they are supervised by an attorney.
Subjects
According to the American Association for Paralegal Education, a good paralegal program covers legal research and writing, litigation, ethics, contracts, business organizations and torts. Students usually also take electives on other legal topics.
Program Styles
Online paralegal programs may combine online and traditional classroom studies. They may include interaction through an Internet chat room or messaging programs, lecture videos, slide shows and message board communication. They may be self-paced or scheduled.
Program Types
Paralegal programs offer a range of educational goals: a certificate, baccalaureate degree and/or associate degree. Like traditional classroom paralegal programs, not all programs are accredited.
Benefits
Online paralegal programs are usually more flexible in when students complete coursework or watch lectures, making them ideal for working individuals.
Problems
Online paralegal programs lack in-person interaction and may also lack real-time interaction, which may be important to some students' learning styles. Online learning also requires more self-discipline than a traditional classroom.
