Without good hygiene and regular precautions, students can easily spread bacteria and germs around schools. Through frequent contact with students' hands and belongings, school lockers can become significant breeding grounds for bacteria.
Identification
Germs and bacteria are tiny organisms that invade our bodies, causing infections and diseases. Bacteria can be easily spread through a variety of methods, such as direct contact and airborne particles.
Considerations
Due to the large amount of people using the facilities, schools have become breeding grounds for bacteria. School areas most commonly affected by bacteria include bathrooms, door handles, lunch trays, water fountains and lockers.
Types of Bacteria
School lockers are common breeding grounds for a variety of bacteria, especially if multiple students share the lockers. Lockers can easily spread bacteria that cause the common cold, flu and pink eye, among others.
MRSA
In early 2010, one of the most serious types of bacteria found on lockers is the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, or MRSA. This type of bacteria is considered a "superbug" and has caused fatalities in several healthy people.
Research Study
In 2007, a local news team in Arkansas teamed up with students at Little Rock Christian Academy to determine how quickly germs can spread at school. An artificial germ was placed on the hands of one student. Within an hour, the germ had spread to other areas of the student's body, her backpack, her locker, the door handle to the school bathroom and dozens of girls who used the bathroom.
